Maybe It's Me Who's "Obsolete"

Lately I've been thinking that maybe the reason why I don't get along with GNOME 3 is not gnome's fault but rather my fault. Why? Here's a couple of reasons.
  • I prefer real paper and pen when it comes to math/physics, which however wastes lots of time…
  • Capitalistic society is kind-of maze-like for me.
  • In lots of tasks I prefer CLI/TUI to GUI tools.
  • I have neither facebook nor twitter account.
  • I prefer acoustic musical instruments to electronic ones.
  • I prefer to write (x)html/css in text editor, i.e. with all the tags written by hand.
  • I use TeX.
  • I prefer classical music to popular music (in a sense of rock, metal, hip-hop, pop, disco, ...)
  • I find kissing in public place embarrassing if not inappropriate (isn't that personal stuff?).
  • Sometimes I wish I were born in pre-industrial era in some scarcely-populated forested mountains.
  • I prefer real books to e-books and still read them (currently I'm reading Dance, Dance, Dance by Haruki Murakami).
  • My primary means of e-communication is e-mail, but I prefer meeting and talking with people IRL.
  • I use mobile phone solely for making calls, writing/reading sms and checking trains' schedules, I don't have a smartphone.
  • I dislike dynamic web, the most I can fathom is youtube, e-shopping and e-banking.
  • I think playing with C preprocessor, fortran, ruby etc. is fun. I don't like Java, C++ and C#.
  • I prefer 2D computer games to 3D ones.
  • I believe getting a girlfriend is always because in the long run I'd like to marry her. I dislike divorce and "love promiscuity" (i.e. changing girlfriends/boyfriends often), (although on the other hand I don't mind different than usual kinds of set-ups [like gay or lesbian marriage, harem, reverse harem, etc.] and consensual prostitution [i.e. offering sexual services as a paid and taxed product without either party being forced into it])
  • I believe that the inside is more important than looks in case of (wo)men.
  • Ok, this list is long enough, isn't it? Time to stop it with: I don't like parties and loud music.

Looking at this list, it seems pretty obvious why I'm frustrated with GNOME 3 and happily switched to XFCE since Fedora 15 (and why, despite me being 23, I still don't have a girlfriend)…

Hehe, there's nothing wrong with You. Just there's no such thing as one ultimate DE for all.
BTW iirc Gnome3 allows you to create your own UIs. So maybe ppl like you, who don't like GS could get together, get your hands dirty with javascript and stitch something up?

You are not alone, but not in not using Gnome3 :P

Well i still use gnome3 out of sheer laziness, so sure enough these are not the reasons for it :)

No, you don't. You just think you do because of the overwhelming mix of noise and information we are constantly bombarded with living in the city.

However, living in pre-industrial means living in pre-medical and pre-science(as-we-know-it) society. Think of the complications. Believe me, you do not want that! Maybe you want to own an island and a jet and be there most of the time, but not really in pre-medical and pre-science era.

Or maybe I am wrong:)

@Peter StJ: Ah, yeah, we kind of idealize those days, but still I'd prefer forested mountains where I have to constantly worry about food to deserted island equipped with private jet. As far as medicine goes – I have never, in my short life, been in a situation where I would need medical help to survive, but yeah, who knows when such moment comes…

on many points i am totally opposite from you:
- these days use electronic medium almost all the time;
- despite being raised in communism, i think i understand capitalism;
- use CLI sometime, but my laziness is attracted to the mouse;
- identica, twitter, facebook, youtube, linkedin, xing, deviantart, flickr, google... you name it;
- not having a preferences for the type of instruments;
- i write too html by hand, not xml;
- never used TeX;
- Metal ++ (but not some other popular genres);
- enjoy kissing in public, bonus when i am in the park with my camera and shoot people kissing under blossoming trees;
- sometime wanting to be born in future;
- waiting for an affordable (in my own terms) ebook reader;
- using a lot IM, email and IRC;
- waiting for an affordable (in my own terms) and competent enough smartphone;
- agree about dynamic web sucking a lot;
- stopped coding long ago;
- hmmm... good old 2D games like Baldur's Gate...
- realistically, you won't get to marry your first girlfriend. and if you do, i'll be a mistake, driving to suffer and a divorce;

will those above said, I do hate GNOME 3 with all my guts, is a desktop designed by idiots for idiots, you should not feel bad for disliking it.

@Martin: Ever had a routine vaccine given to you? Then you don't know how many times you were close to a real bad sickness but avoided it because we know how to get the body ready nowadays?
Had a strep sore throat as a kid? Well thanks to modern medicine for making sure it didn't complicate into Rheumatic fever.
etc...

People don't appreciate modern medicine enough...

I also prefer 2D computer games to 3D ones : design was much better, not to mention fun

This list is kinda fun, I see myself in a lot of what you say. :)

- Capitalistic society is kind-of maze-like for me.
- In lots of tasks I prefer CLI/TUI to GUI tools.
- I have neither facebook nor twitter account.
- I prefer acoustic musical instruments to electronic ones.
- I prefer to write (x)html/css in text editor, i.e. with all the tags written by hand.
- I use TeX.(well, I use LaTeX actually, but the point still stands)
- I prefer real books to e-books and still read them
- My primary means of e-communication is e-mail, but I prefer meeting and talking with people IRL.
- I use mobile phone solely for making calls and writing/reading sms (not even train schedules like you :D). I don't have a smartphone. I call less than 20 minutes per month, so the cellphone is something I have "just in case", but I don't like it and wish I could avoid it completely (although my girlfriend would probably not like it ^^)
- I dislike e-shopping. I avoid it like plague. The only times I use it is when I have no other choice, usually because I have been too lazy and it's now too late to use another method.
- I don't care about 2D vs 3D computer games, but I preferred the time where the scenario, gameplay and immersion were more important than the 3D effects.
- I believe that the inside is more important than looks in case of (wo)men, but I wouldn't discard the latter (which seems to be what you are implying) as it still is an important factor (i.e both are important, the former more than the latter)

So while we agree on a lot of those items, I absolutely love Gnome 3, even more than I loved Gnome 2 (and I loved it for the 4 years I have been using it).

So no, you are probably not at fault in not liking Gnome 3. :)

Great post. I will +1 all except:
a) i dont use tex
b) i love disco ( especially late 70s watch this for example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ajDeZADQMI ) but commercial music in general sucks. i tend to seperate music to "artists" selling an image & artists actually loving what they do and do it with passion. A large part of electronic music is like that. Most people you dont even know how they look like or their genre.
c) i dont want to get married, but i do want relationships to last long.
d) my own addition. i still believe the web lies inside a terminal emulator window. & that will never change.

I dont think any of the stuff you listed are responsible for not liking gnome 3. Actually personally i think its more usable than GNOME 2 (which i havent used since 2006).
